John Rutter's Requiem, composed in 1985, is a seven-movement choral work that offers a personal meditation on death and remembrance, rather than a strict setting of the Requiem Mass. It blends traditional Latin texts with excerpts from the 1662 Book of Common Prayer. The piece is known for its accessible melodies, beautiful textures, and its arch-like structure, which explores themes of prayer, psalmody, and ultimately, hope and affirmation.
